  • Bro Hugh, a single by Muyiwa Kunnuji’s Osemako, blends elements of Africa’s premier dance genres to pay tribute to the pioneers of the continent’s popular musics, whose legacies remain pivotal in trans-regional contemporary musical contexts. The trails of South African Marabi, Central African Soukous and West African Highlife, nested within more modern Afrobeat sensibilities combine to produce a sonic depiction of profound African pride. On the flip side is a linguistic convergence involving an artistic blend of English, French and Yoruba, with each language aptly positioned in lamenting the transience of human life, while encouraging a visionary outlook, which often culminates in fulfilled dreams. The creative combination of call-and-response, percussive bass and tradition-inspired rhythms in this piece engenders a nostalgic, yet futuristic musical collage, which advances African artistic praxis.
